CONTENT ANALYSIS

            TERMS

Food chain, trophic levels, producer, consumer, primary consumer, secondary consumer, tertiary consumers, decomposers.

                FACTS
·         Food chain is a linear sequence of organism through which nutrients and energy pass on by eating and being eaten.
·         Each member of the food chain is called trophic level.
·         First trophic level includes producers.
·         Plants that perform photosynthesis are called producers.
·         Organism that depend other organisms for food is called consumers.
·         Secondary trophic level include primary consumers.
·         Primary consumers directly depend on plants for food.
·         Secondary consumers are included in the third trophic level.
·         Secondary consumers feed on primary consumers.
·         Fourth trophic level include tertiary consumers.
·         Tertiary consumers feed on secondary consumers.
·         Food chain ends in decomposers.
·         Decomposers convert dead plants and animals into humus.

            CONCEPTS -  Food chain

LEARNING OUTCOME IN TERMS OF SPECIFICATION

COGNITIVE DOMAIN              Enable pupils to develop
· Retrieving scientific terms, facts and definitions related to food chain.
· Explaining the process of energy transfer through food chain.
· Executing the acquired knowledge to identify different food chains from our surroundings.
·  Differentiating various trophic levels.

PROCESS SKILL                        Enable pupils to develop skills like
·         Reading and collecting extra information.

AFFECTIVE DOMAIN               Enable pupils to develop values like
·         Positive attitude towards developing independent thinking about food chains in nature

PRE REQUISITES

Students already know that all organisms directly or indirectly on plants for food.

TEACHING LEARNING AIDS

VISUAL AIDS- Charts showing diagrams of various food relations

REFERENCE- 8th standard biology text book

CLASSROOM INTERACTION PROCEDURE
PUPIL’S RESPONSE

INTRODUCTION

Teacher maintains a rapport with the students. Teacher ask the students ,
From where we get energy?
Good! From where we get food?
Very good! For food we depend other animals or plant. All animals depends plants directly or indirectly for food. Plants can prepare their own food through photosynthesis by using sunlight, carbon dioxide and water. Today we are discussing something about food relations in our nature

PRESENTATION

ACTIVITY NO: 1

Teacher presents some charts with diagrams of some organisms showing food relations and ask students to find out the relations between those diagrams

CONSOLIDATION

The diagrams represent various trophic levels. The trophic levels together constitute food chain. Food chain is a linear sequence of organism through which energy and nutrient pass on by eating and being eaten. Here the food chain created by the given organisms is  GRASS --> GRASSHOPPER --> FROG --> SNAKE --> HAWK

ACTIVITY NO: 2

Teacher provides some cards with some dialogues. Select some students and give cards to them and ask to act as the characters in the given card.

Grasshopper : Oh! I'm very hungry. I want to eat something. Now I am going to eat you dear Grass
Grass:  You can eat me. No problem. I'm happy to be your food. We are poor producers who got the responsibility of feeding many organisms like you.
Frog: Well said Grass. But this grasshopper has no more chance to eat you, because now he is going to be my food.
Snake: Oh ! You're a fool Mr, Frog. You can't eat that frog now. Because I'm very hungry.
Hawk: Hello dear snake, it' s your last lunch. Make it faster. I don't have much time to wait. I'm waiting for your tasty meat.

CONSOLIDATION

Each organism in the food chain represent different trophic levels. Plants are the producers of the living world. They are included in the first trophic level. Primary consumers depend producers directly for food. They are included in secondary trophic level. Secondary consumers who depend primary consumer for food represent third trophic level. The tertiary consumers feed on secondary consumers and they represent fourth trophic level. Fifth trophic level is represented by quarternary consumers.  All dead plants and animals are converted into humus by the action of microbes.
